A BA honours Graphic Design graduate from Edinburgh College of Art (1991), Ninian first got his foot in the door at The Evening News in Scotland's capital city, where he rapidly discovered an aptitude for creating vector graphics using Adobe Illustrator.

Building on his success in Edinburgh, Thomson Regional Newspapers recruited him to their trial internal graphics agency project, TGS, based out of Newcastle, and run by American graphics supremo Jeff Goertzen. On completion of that three-month experiment, he was picked-up by
The Scotsman newspaper for a brief sojourn before being head-hunted by Paris-based Jean Schalit Infographie (now part of the Idé agency), to service a multitude of French newspapers, magazines and books.

After a year working in the French capital, London beckoned and Ninian landed his first Graphic Editor position for The Observer newspaper at the age of 25. He successfully redesigned their graphic style and ran the department for almost three years before joining
Reuters News Graphics Service, also in London, in 1997.

Reuters proved to be an unparalleled learning ground for Ninian, where he honed his skills on a diverse range of projects covering breaking news, business, features, science & technology, sports and everything in between for over 500 media clients worldwide. It was also here that he won several SND awards and helped the RNGS team to produce some of the world’s first commercially-successful Flash-animated news graphics.

In 2000, Reuters sent Ninian to cover the Olympic Games live from Sydney and while there, he fell in love with the city. In 2005, after over seven years at Reuters, Ninian moved to Australia to take on the challenge of running The Sydney Morning Herald's graphics department. During a three year stay, he oversaw the redesign and modernisation of the newspaper's graphics and managed a seven-strong team of artists.

2008 saw Ninian move to Toronto and to The Globe And Mail, where he worked on their daily graphics output, Vancouver Olympics package and Redesign 2010 project. In late 2011, after more than three years working for Canada's national broadsheet, Ninian joined independent news graphics agency Graphic News in London, UK.
